Silken Tofu Pesto: A Chinese Medicine Inspired Recipe to Nourish Your Energy Naturally
Most women who come to me for support are already doing their best with food, movement and lifestyle.
One thing I’ve learned through both nursing and Chinese Medicine and the women I meet is this:
Energy is not inevitable. We have to cultivate it.
Cultivation means choosing foods and practices that support your Qi, the vital energy that keeps everything in the body moving smoothly.
When Qi is flowing well you feel clear, grounded, emotionally steady, energised and connected to yourself.
When Qi becomes stagnant you can feel heavy, foggy, bloated, stuck, irritable or depleted.
Movement helps free up that stuck energy, but what you eat matters just as much.
This is where simple plant forward meals shine, especially when they are balanced, grounding and easy to digest.
One of my favourite recipes that supports all of this is my silken tofu pesto.
It is creamy, light, nourishing and beautifully aligned with Chinese Medicine principles and each ingredient supports your energy.
Silken tofu
In Chinese Medicine, tofu is cooling, moistening and supportive for Yin, the nourishing, restorative aspect of your energy.
It helps replenish without weighing the body down.
Perfect for midlife women who need energy without overstimulation.
Basil
Basil is warming and uplifting.
It moves Qi and supports digestion and emotional balance, especially when you feel tense or tight in the chest or belly.
Cashews
Cashews strengthen the Spleen system, which transforms food into energy.
They are grounding and stabilising without heaviness.
Nutritional yeast
Supports Qi and blood.
Rich in B vitamins which naturally support energy, mood and metabolism from both eastern and western perspectives.
Olive oil
Moistens dryness, supports digestion and helps the body absorb nutrients.
Garlic
Helps move stagnant Qi, supports immunity and awakens digestive fire.
When these ingredients come together you get a dish that is light, energising, grounding, nourishing and easy to digest.
Exactly the kind of food we women need!

FAQ: Nourishing Energy Through Chinese Medicine Nutrition
What foods help move Qi in Chinese Medicine?
Foods that support Qi movement include basil, garlic, ginger, citrus fruits and lightly cooked greens. These foods help release tension, improve digestion and create a sense of inner flow. Basil and garlic are both included in this silken tofu pesto for this exact reason.
Is silken tofu good for midlife women?
Yes. Silken tofu is nourishing for Yin, which is the cooling, restorative aspect of your energy. It supports balance, hydration, digestion and hormonal steadiness. It is especially supportive during perimenopause and menopause.
How can I increase my energy naturally?
In Chinese Medicine, healthy energy comes from two things.
Movement that frees stuck Qi and food that is easy to digest and nourishing for the Spleen system.
Gentle movement plus meals like this pesto can help improve clarity, motivation and steady daily energy.
Is plant based eating aligned with Chinese Medicine?
Yes when it is done with grounding foods that are warm, cooked or blended and easy to digest. Chinese Medicine encourages balance rather than extremes. Meals like tofu pesto with warm vegetables or grains fit perfectly.
What can I serve silken tofu pesto with?
You can mix it with zucchini noodles, pair it with roasted vegetables, spread it on toast, stir it into rice or quinoa or use it as a dip. It makes meals light, fresh and deeply nourishing.
