The Simple Dance Practice That Helped Me Reset After a Hard Week
Dance is one of the most powerful and research-supported tools for improving mental health, reducing stress, and regulating the nervous system. Wu Tao Dance, a mindful movement practice that combines breath, Qi flow, and emotional release, offers a gentle way to reconnect with your body and restore your inner balance. In this blog, I share my personal story of a stressful week and how one simple class transformed my mood and brought me back to gratitude.
I want to share something personal with you today.
This past week has stretched me emotionally. Between navigating workers comp, pain, the desk work, and the uncertainty of what comes next, my mind has been ruminating and my body very tense.
I’ve been feeling flat, depleted, and wound up.
Luckily Tuesday is my class day with a beautiful group of dancers that always feels like a joyous reset.
So even though I wasn’t feeling my best, I went to class.
The moment I stepped into the room and connected with my students (who are like good friends) things started to shift.
As soon as I began those first gentle familiar stretches, I could feel the tension start to melt away. My breath deepened. My shoulders dropped and that nasty swirl of worry began to release.
Then we started the dance.
Wow! The beautiful flowing movement always feels like coming home.
With every sway, every visualisation of letting go, I could feel the heaviness leaving my body.
Wu Tao works on me like nothing else does.
Each dance takes you through an energetic journey
letting go
trust and replenishment
growth and refocus
purification
and finally gratitude!
By the time we reached the final dance, I felt like myself again. Not perfect, but present and calm, able to breathe and relax back into what is. I shed a few quiet tears of gratitude for having arrived. Home again. Back to me.
This is why I return to this practice again and again. Especially when life feels too much.
Research backs it.
Studies show that mindful dance and somatic movement:
• reduce stress and cortisol
• improve mood and emotional resilience
• increase connection between breath, body, and inner calm
• ease anxiety
• support nervous system regulation more quickly than meditation alone
Dance is one of the most ancient healing arts for a reason.
It moves stuff when talking can’t.
